Movember and men’s health

Movember is the foremost global charity dedicated to improving men's health by concentrating on mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate and testicular cancer.

What is Movember?

Movember, formerly known as November, is a month when brave and selfless men all over the world grow mustaches and women unite behind them to raise awareness and finances for men's health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Movember was on the unshaved lips of every guy who wanted to transform growing his facial hair into a full-fledged movement a few years ago. The truth is that Movember is its own entity, with its own set of laws, and sure, it is an act of activism.

History and Origin

In 1999, Seven Nightly News featured a report on a group of young men from Adelaide, South Australia, who developed the phrase "Movember" and the concept of growing mustaches for charity throughout November.

As per the news, Members of the Adelaide-based "Movember Committee" explained how they came up with the idea for Movember one night during a gathering. The organization began with 80 men from Adelaide and quickly grew into a national phenomenon. They also wanted to earn money for the RSPCA by selling T-shirts in the "Growing Whiskers for Whiskers" campaign.

In 2004, an organization in Melbourne arranged an event in which 30 men grew mustaches for 30 days to raise awareness about prostate cancer and male despair.

An organization called the “Movember Foundation charity” was founded after launching a campaign on the same theme. After that, they raised a lot of cash and were given official charity status in Australia for men’s health.

What are the Movember rules?

  • Start with a clean-shaven face
  • For the entire month of Movember, you must grow and groom a mustache
  • Beards, goatees, and fake mustaches don’t count
  • Use the power of the mustache to create conversation and raise funds for men’s health

“Movember’s partnership is pivotal to the fulfillment of our mission to save lives.”

-Jonathan W. Simons, M.D., President & CEO, PCF

According to research, men die 5 years earlier on average than women and for completely avoidable reasons. Hence we can consider that the health of men should be a priority.

A growing number of men – over 10.8 million worldwide – are living with prostate cancer. Testicular cancer is the most frequent malignancy in young men around the world. And one man dies by suicide every minute of every day around the world, with men accounting for 69 percent of all suicides.

Movember is the first international organization dedicated completely to men's health. Still, The Foundation runs awareness and fundraising events all year, with the annual Movember campaign becoming internationally known for its fun, disruptive approach to fundraising and encouraging men to take action for their health.

Prostate Cancer

  • Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that affects the prostate gland. In males, the prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland that generates seminal fluid, which feeds and transports sperm.
  • A man diagnosed with prostate cancer is on average 66 years old, while a guy who dies from prostate cancer is on average 80 years old.
  • African American males had a 74 percent higher risk of prostate cancer than non-Hispanic Caucasian men.
Difficulty urinating, frequent urination, incontinence, heat during urination, or blood in the urine are all signs of prostate cancer.

Testicular Cancer

  • The testicles (testes) are placed inside the scrotum, a loose sack of skin beneath the penis, where testicular cancer develops. Male sex hormones and sperm are produced in the testicles for reproduction.
  • A lump or enlargement in either testicle, a sense of heaviness in the scrotum, a dull aching in the abdomen or groin, a sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum, and back pain are all signs and symptoms of testicular cancer.

Here are some of the accomplishments made possible by Movember's fundraising efforts.

Movember helped to the approval of two new FDA-approved prostate cancer medications (Olaparib and Rucaparib).

Movember's Social Connections Challenge will provide £1.86 million in funding to 11 men's health projects across the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Canada over the next two years (SCC). As a result of the epidemic, a direct reaction has been developed.

Nuts & Bolts is Movember's comprehensive testicular cancer website, which provides men with information and support. The site walks you through the process from diagnosis through therapy, with sections on medical visits and sex and fertility. There's also a trial option to speak with a guide in Australia or the United Kingdom who has been diagnosed with the disease, as well as a community Q&A that collects actual queries from our community.

Being a socially committed and responsible information technology company, we urge to spread awareness about the very idea and commitment of the thought behind "Movember".
